I just purchased a 1971 Merc 7.5 hp with thunderbolt ignition. The guy I bought it from said the stator was bad, said it was running when motor quit. I did a spark check and it appears to have spark( although appears weak)on both cylinders. How can I be sure that it is indeed the stator that is bad? I would hate to replace it and find out it was another problem as these stators are quite pricey. Thanks for any help with this.
