Please help...
We have an OMC 230 in a 1980 Grew 2350. Just had some valve work done and the head had to be planed. Lousy time finding a good mechanic...
Long story short... Since the work. The motor runs well until we try to idle (or drive slowly in a channel). It will run steady for a while, then all of a sudden will start to chug and cut out. Full out... it would back fire slightly. After inspecting a few things I discovered that the mechanic didn't hook back up the temp guage wire to the intake, the distributor was never tightened and a couple of the spark plug wires were not even snapped on to the plugs properly. I remedied all this and moved the distributor slightly and now it seems to start easily. It runs in neutral at about 800 rpms (which I know is slightly high) but if I bring the rpms down it begins to stall.
We have good compression in all 8 cylinders, new plugs and wires, tune up kit installed into the Mallory point ignition, rebuild kit in carb, new fuel pump, external fuel water separator (levelled with engine) yet are still having this stalling issue.
Would you have any suggestions as to what I may need to keep my eye on when I go out on the water?
Any input or suggestions would be appreciated.
Thank you.
