What is Wakesurfing?
Wakesurfing has quickly become the fastest-growing watersport. Experience the excitement: riders trail behind a boat, riding the boat’s wake without directly being pulled by the boat. As you venture out on the water, riders will use a tow rope to initially get up on the wake. Then the rope is dropped, and wakesurfers ride the steep face just below a wave’s peak.
Wakesurf boards are designed in three different styles: skim, surf, and hybrid. You’ll want to consider your skill level as well as the type of board you want to ride. Another point to weigh when selecting your wakesurf board is that each board style is specifically configured for different wave sizes.
Up until recently, wake surfing has been possible only behind inboard or v-drive boats. Now, Volvo/Penta offers forward drives that have impacted runabout brands to actually construct dedicated surf boats. Not looking for a surf boat, but want to wakesurf? Skim vs. Surf-Style Wakesurf Boards
Skim-style surfboards like the Hyperlite Hi-Fi or Byerly Action are designed for boats that throw larger wakes. These lightning-fast boards are ideal for 360s, 720s, or more traditional surfboard tricks.
Surf-style Boards like the Hyperlite Quad, or Liquid Force POD, are engineered on the thicker side to offer greater buoyancy. These wakeboards are easy to ride, making carve surfing attainable regardless of skill level. The Surf-style boards also allow riders to catch air, then land back into the wake.
Original Hybrid Boards options include Liquid Force Fish, Hyperlite Shim, or Hyperlite Broadcast. These boards are designed with a wakeboard style construction. They are great behind any boat, and are great for beginners and advanced level riders alike.
