Helm Pump: Brains of the System
Traditionally on a boat the helm refers to the tiller or wheel. In modern terms it is the steering station where the captain controls the vessel. This is why the hydraulic pump on a boat is often referred to as a helm pump.
The helm pump can be thought of as the brains of a hydraulic steering system. As soon as you being to turn your boat steering wheel, the helm will begin to force fluid into the hydraulic lines to the steering cylinder. This push-pull movement moves the cylinder to direct the rudder or outboard accordingly.
When not actively steering the torque or hydraulic pressure in the hoses is held by a one way valve located inside the helm. This eiliminates any “feedback” to the steering wheel making for smoother sailing.
