A Bimini Top is a must-have accessoruy for any boat or pontoon, providing shade on sunny days whil estill allowing you to fold it back when you want some rays or need to trailer or store your boat. Over time, the fabric can degrade or become worn, making replacement necessary.
At Wholesale Marin, we carry a wide selection of Bimini tops for many types of pleasure craft and pontoons. The good news? Installing a new Bimini top is a manageable DIY project if you follow these steps carefully.
Tools and Materials You'll Need
Before you start, make sure you have these items on hand:
- Eye straps
- Waterproof marine caulk or sealant
- T-Square
- Tape measure
- Chalk line
- Power drill with bits (including countersink bit)
- Manual screwdriver set
- Box-wrench set
Tip: Bimini top installation is a two-person task, so have a friend assist you.
Step 1: Position the Bimini Top
-
Fully Extend the top and have your assistant hold it in place.
-
If replacing an old top. use the existing deck hinge locations. If this is a new installation, carefully measure to ensure the deck hinges are exactly opposite each aother and parallel. This prevents binding when the top is folded down.
Step 2: Mount the Deck Hinges
-
Mark the mounting holes, making sure no wires or hoses are in the way underneath.
-
Drill the holes and chamfer with a countersink bit to prevent cracking the gelcoat.
-
Apply marine sealant around the holes to ensure they are watertight.
Step 3: Install the Bimini Top and Eye Straps
-
Bolt the main bow bases to the deck hinges to erect the top.
-
Extend the fore and aft web straps to align with the web straps to form an "M" shape on each side.
-
Mount eye straps horizontally: mark, drill, embed, and secure them with self-tapping screws.
-
Attach snap hooks from the Biminni top to the eye straps and adjust the buckles evenly.
Pro Tip: Consider adding a zippered storage boot for your Bimini top when it's not in use. You can also add support stays for additional stability and tilt adjustment, allowing you to agle the top up to 45° for sun or shade preference.
Step 4: Adjust the Fit
-
If the top doesn't appear centered, gently pull it into place.
-
If the fabric is sagging in the front or rear, adjust the bows or straps slightly for a smooth ,taut fit.
