Why Oil Changes Matter for Indmar Engines
Routine oil changes are one of the most effective ways to extend the life of your Indmar inboard engine. Indmarengines are precision built for power and reliability. Using the proper marine-grade oil helps maintain that performance season after season.
Marine engines operate under more demanding conditions than automoative engines. This includes higher loads, extended run times, and greater exposure to moisture. Regular oil changes help remove contaminants, protects against corrosion, and ensures the internal components of your Indmar engine remain properly lubricated.

Why Choose Marine Engine Oil?
Marine grade engine oil is specifically formulatged to meet the demands boat engines face. They provide superiod protection when compared to standard automotive oils. Each blend is engineered to handle sustained high RPM, heavy loads, and long idle periods.
Using marine oil helps ensure proper lubrication and cooling throughout your crankcase system, protecting against wear, corrosion, and contaminant buildup. This results in smoother operation, longer engine life, and more consistent performance across every ride.
There are 3 types of marine oil you can buy. They come in a sort of good, better, and better lineup. Check out our breakdown of each oil type below.
Grade | Oil Type | Highlights |
---|---|---|
Good | Mineral/Conventional | Cheapest option, breaks down faster requiring more frequent oil changes |
Better | Semi-Synthetic | Better cold-start protection, resists breakdown, balances cost and performance |
Best | Full Synthetic | Maximum protection, higher upfront cost but longer lasting |
Proper Indmar Engine Oil Maintenance Schedule
Initial Break In Service
For new engines, it is recommended to change the oil and filter after the first 20 hours of use. This helps remove any residual metal particles or contaminants from the break in process.s
Every 100 Hours or Annually
Change the oil and filter every 100 hours of run time or once per season. This helps maintain oil integrity while ensuring reliable lubrication.
End of Season
Before storing your boat for the winter or extended periods it is recommended to change your oil. Old oil can hold moisture and contaminants from use. These contaminants can cause corrosion or internal wear that over time can lead to costly repairs.
Indmar Oil Change Tip
Warm up your engine before draining the oil. This helps contaminants flow out more easily and ensures a cleaner oil change.

Indmar Crankcase Oil FAQs
► What type of oil should I use in my Indmar engine?
Most modern Indmar engines use 15W-40 or 20W-50 marine-grade oil that meets NMMA FC-W standards.
► How often should I change the oil?
Every 100 hours or once a year, and after the first 20–50 hours for new engines.
► Can I use automotive oil in my Indmar engine?
No. Automotive oils aren’t formulated for marine use and lack the anti-corrosion properties required for humid or water-exposed environments.
► What happens if I skip an oil change?
Old oil thickens, loses its protective qualities, and can cause internal wear, poor performance, and costly repairs.
