Solas Rubex Hub Kit and Propeller Fitment Guide

Choosing a Solas Rubex propeller involves two related decisions: finding the correct propeller for your boat and matching it with the right Rubex hub kit for your engine. The propeller determines performance characteristics such as pitch, diameter, blade count, and material, while the hub kit connects that propeller to a specific propeller shaft. You need both a compatible Rubex propeller and the correct hub kit for a complete installation.

The Solas Rubex interchangeable hub system makes it possible to use compatible Rubex propellers across many outboard and sterndrive applications by pairing the propeller with an engine-specific hub kit. However, horsepower alone is not enough to determine fitment. Engine manufacturer, model, year, stroke, spline count, gearcase size, and Rubex propeller series may all affect which components you need.

What Is a Solas Rubex Hub Kit?

A Solas Rubex hub kit contains the hub and application-specific hardware used to install a compatible Rubex propeller on an outboard or sterndrive. Instead of permanently building one engine-specific hub into every propeller, the interchangeable system separates the propeller from the hub components that match the propeller shaft.

This design allows multiple engine applications to use propellers from the same Rubex series when each engine is paired with its correct hub kit. It can also make future propeller changes more convenient because a compatible Rubex hub kit may be transferred to another Rubex propeller in the same applicable series, provided the components remain serviceable and the new propeller is compatible with that hub system.

A Rubex propeller and a Rubex hub kit perform different jobs:

  • The propeller provides the selected diameter, pitch, blade count, rotation, material, and performance characteristics.
  • The hub kit matches the propeller to the engine or drive's propeller shaft and installation requirements.

Rubex propellers are generally sold without the required hub kit unless the product listing specifically states otherwise. Always check the product details before ordering.

How to Find the Correct Solas Rubex Hub Kit

The most reliable approach is to identify the engine completely before selecting either component. Start with the engine identification plate, owner's manual, or model information rather than relying on the boat's model year. A boat and its engine may be from different model years, and an engine may have been replaced during the boat's service life.

1. Identify the Engine Manufacturer

Begin with the manufacturer of the outboard or sterndrive. The Rubex application chart includes fitments for major manufacturers and drive families, including Mercury/Mariner/MerCruiser, Johnson/Evinrude/BRP, Force, Honda, Nissan/Tohatsu, OMC Cobra, Suzuki, Volvo, and Yamaha.

Do not select a hub kit simply because its spline count appears correct for a different manufacturer. The complete application must match.

2. Confirm the Horsepower and Exact Engine Model

Horsepower narrows the search, but the exact model or engine family can determine the final result. Labels such as Bigfoot, Command Thrust, SeaPro, E-TEC, BF, DF, F-series, and other model designations can identify a different gearcase or propeller-shaft configuration within the same horsepower range.

For this reason, two engines with the same horsepower and manufacturer may still use different Rubex hub kits.

3. Verify the Engine Year

Locate the engine's model year or applicable serial-number information. Manufacturers sometimes change gearcases, propeller shafts, or related hardware during a model's production run. The application chart may divide one horsepower range into separate year ranges with different hub-kit numbers.

When the chart says “and newer,” confirm that your engine still falls within the application described. For newer or unusual models, comparing the engine model and serial information against current manufacturer data is a smart final check.

4. Check Two-Stroke or Four-Stroke Fitment

Some chart entries distinguish between two-stroke and four-stroke engines. Stroke type can be especially important when a manufacturer offered both versions at the same horsepower. Do not assume the fitment is interchangeable unless both are included in the same chart entry.

5. Confirm the Propeller-Shaft Spline Count

Splines are the ridges on the propeller shaft that engage the hub. The Rubex chart lists the required spline count for each application. Common counts include 8, 10, 13, 14, 15, 17, and 19 splines, depending on the engine and gearcase.

If you count the splines directly, inspect the shaft carefully and do not include any smooth keyway, missing space, or other non-spline feature as an additional spline. When in doubt, verify the count through the engine's model information or parts diagram.

6. Verify the Gearcase Size

Gearcase size is another critical fitment detail. It is commonly expressed as an approximate diameter, such as 3-1/4, 4-1/4, or 4-3/4 inches. Some engine families use different gearcases within the same horsepower range, including standard and larger “Bigfoot” or “Command Thrust” configurations.

The listed gearcase size also helps determine the compatible Rubex propeller category or series. Matching the hub kit without confirming the propeller series can still result in an incompatible combination.

How to Read the Rubex Hub Kit Application Chart

Once you have the engine information, locate the appropriate manufacturer and engine entry in the application chart. Read across the same row to confirm every listed fitment detail and identify the required hub kit and propeller series.

Chart Field What to Confirm
Manufacturer The brand of the engine or sterndrive
Engine Model Horsepower and any model-family designation
Stroke Two-stroke or four-stroke when specified
Years The engine's applicable model-year range
Spline The number of splines on the propeller shaft
Gearcase The listed gearcase size or configuration
Hub Kit The required Solas Rubex hub-kit number
Prop Series The Rubex propeller category compatible with that application
Bronze Hub Option An alternate bronze hub-kit option when one is listed

For example, the chart can show separate fitments for Johnson/Evinrude 40–75 HP engines based on production years and gearcase size. A small-gearcase application may use a different hub kit and propeller series than a large-gearcase engine in a similar horsepower range. This is why matching only the manufacturer and horsepower can lead to the wrong kit.

Important: Read across one complete row. Never combine the hub kit from one row with the propeller series, year range, or gearcase information from another.

Choosing a Compatible Rubex Propeller

After identifying the correct hub kit, use the propeller-series column to narrow the available Rubex propellers. The series establishes the physical propeller family that works with the listed gearcase and hub system. From there, choose the proper diameter, pitch, blade count, material, and rotation for the boat and its operating needs.

Wholesale Marine carries several Solas Rubex propeller families, including:

The application chart establishes compatibility, but it does not by itself determine the ideal pitch or blade design for every boat. Use the Wholesale Marine Propeller Finder to narrow your options by engine information and pitch.

If you are still deciding between propeller materials, read Aluminum vs. Stainless Steel Boat Propellers. For help understanding pitch, diameter, and blade count, see our guide to boat propeller basics.

Rubber and Bronze Rubex Hub Kit Options

The application chart may list a standard Rubex hub kit and a separate bronze hub option for the same general engine application. These are distinct part numbers, so order the exact version required for the intended setup rather than assuming that a “B” suffix is interchangeable with the standard kit in every situation.

If the chart does not list a bronze option for your application, do not substitute one based on horsepower, spline count, or gearcase size alone. Confirm the complete Solas application before ordering.

What Comes in a Solas Rubex Hub Kit?

Contents vary by hub-kit number and engine application. Depending on the kit, components may include the Rubex hub, thrust washer, aft spacer, flat or tab washer, propeller nut, adapter, or other application-specific hardware. Some installations reuse original engine hardware such as the nut or cotter pin.

For example, the RBX-100 instructions show a thrust washer, Rubex hub, and aft spacer included with the kit, while the original nut and cotter pin are not included. That parts list should not be applied to every Rubex kit. Review the product listing and the instructions supplied for the exact hub-kit number before beginning installation.

Installing a Solas Rubex Hub Kit

Rubex installation details differ by hub kit, engine manufacturer, and drive. Always follow the instructions for the exact kit and consult the engine or drive owner's manual for safety precautions, hardware arrangement, and propeller-nut torque.

A typical installation may include the following general steps:

  1. Shift the engine into neutral, turn the ignition off, and prevent the engine from starting while the propeller is being serviced.
  2. Inspect the propeller shaft and verify that the correct thrust washer and required hardware are available.
  3. Orient and insert the Rubex hub into the compatible propeller as shown in the kit-specific instructions.
  4. Seat the hub properly in the propeller's hub cavity.
  5. Grease the propeller shaft as directed.
  6. Slide the assembled propeller and hub onto the propeller shaft.
  7. Install the required spacer, washer, nut, cotter pin, locking tab, or other hardware in the specified order.
  8. Tighten the propeller nut to the engine or drive manufacturer's specified torque and secure the retaining hardware.

Do not use this overview as a substitute for the instructions supplied with the hub kit. Certain kits use different components, hub orientation, adapters, or retaining hardware. The engine owner's manual remains the authority for the correct torque specification and engine-specific safety procedures.

Common Rubex Fitment Mistakes to Avoid

  • Shopping by horsepower alone: Engines with the same horsepower may have different years, gearcases, spline counts, or model families.
  • Using the boat's year instead of the engine's year: The engine may not match the hull's model year.
  • Ignoring model designations: Bigfoot, Command Thrust, four-stroke, and other configurations can change the required fitment.
  • Matching only the spline count: Spline count is important, but it is not the complete application.
  • Overlooking the propeller series: The selected propeller must belong to a series compatible with the hub kit and gearcase.
  • Assuming the hub kit is included: Rubex propellers and hub kits are generally purchased separately unless a listing says otherwise.
  • Assuming every kit contains the same hardware: Included and reused components vary by kit and engine application.
  • Reusing damaged components: Inspect the hub and installation hardware before transferring them to another propeller.

Solas Rubex Hub Kit FAQs

Do Solas Rubex propellers include a hub kit?

Rubex propellers are generally sold without the required hub kit unless the product listing specifically states that one is included. A compatible propeller and the correct engine-specific Rubex hub kit are both required for a complete installation.

How do I know which Rubex hub kit I need?

Use the Solas Rubex Hub Kit Application Chart and match the engine manufacturer, horsepower or model, model year, stroke type when listed, propeller-shaft spline count, and gearcase size. Read across the matching row to find the required hub-kit number and compatible propeller series.

Can two engines with the same horsepower use different Rubex hub kits?

Yes. Engines with the same horsepower may use different gearcases, spline counts, propeller-shaft configurations, or hardware depending on the manufacturer, model, year, and engine family.

Can I reuse my Rubex hub kit with a new propeller?

A serviceable Rubex hub kit may be reusable with another compatible Rubex propeller in the applicable series. Inspect the hub and hardware for wear or damage, and confirm compatibility with the new propeller and engine before installation.

What is the difference between the hub-kit number and propeller series?

The hub-kit number identifies the components that match the propeller to a particular engine or drive. The propeller series identifies the compatible propeller family. The application chart provides both because matching only one does not confirm a complete installation.

Does every Rubex hub kit contain the same parts?

No. Kit contents vary by application. A kit may include a hub, thrust washer, aft spacer, washer, nut, adapter, or other hardware, while some original engine components may need to be reused. Check the exact kit's listing and installation instructions.

Can I choose a Rubex hub kit using only the spline count?

No. Spline count is only one fitment factor. You must also verify the engine manufacturer, model or horsepower, model year, gearcase size, stroke type when specified, and compatible Rubex propeller series.

Where can I find Rubex hub kit installation instructions?

Use the instructions supplied with the specific hub kit or the installation-instructions link on the applicable Wholesale Marine product page. Also consult the engine or drive owner's manual for the correct safety procedures, hardware arrangement, and propeller-nut torque.
