Frequently Asked Questions
What is Toplac Plus used for, and where on the boat can it be applied?
Toplac Plus is a topside paint for use above the waterline. It's suitable for hulls, decks, cabins, and trim. It's not an antifouling paint and should not be used below the waterline.
Do I need to thin Toplac Plus, and which thinner should I use?
Thinning depends on your application method. For brush or roller application, add up to 10% of Interlux 2333N Reducing Solvent. For spray application, use Interlux 216 Special Thinner instead. Do not exceed 10% thinner by volume regardless of method. For cleanup, use Interlux 333 Brushing Liquid.
Does this paint require tipping after rolling, or will it self-level?
One of Toplac Plus's key advantages is that it doesn't require tipping. Its flow and leveling characteristics produce a smooth finish straight off the roller, which is a meaningful benefit for DIY painters who want a professional-looking result without the two-person roller-and-tipper technique.
What are the temperature and timing requirements for application?
Apply only when ambient temperatures are between 41°F and 95°F. At 77°F, the paint is touch dry in about 2 hours, with a recoat window of 8 hours minimum to 2 days maximum. At cooler temps (59°F), allow 3 hours to touch dry and 16 hours before recoating. One important note: avoid applying late in the evening, as overnight condensation can cause a loss of gloss during the cure.
How many coats do I need, and what is the coverage rate?
A minimum of 2 coats is recommended for full protection, with 3 coats for optimal results. For touch-up or repair work, a single coat may be sufficient. Coverage is 587 square feet per gallon per coat, so a quart will cover approximately 147 square feet per coat. Factor in your number of coats when estimating quantities.
Can Toplac Plus be applied over existing paint, or does the surface need to be stripped?
If the existing surface is in good condition, you do not need to strip it. Clean the surface with a suitable detergent, rinse, allow to dry, then sand with 280–320 grit paper and wipe down with Interlux 333 Brushing Liquid before applying. If the existing coating is in poor condition, remove it and prime the bare substrate first. Toplac Plus is compatible with single-part primers, enamels, and polyurethane.
