Change engine oil and replace oil filter every 100 hours of use, or annually (whichever comes first).
Mercury Oil Change Instructions for 15/20HP 4-Stroke Outboards
How to change your outboard engine oil
- Lock the outboard in the full tilt-up position
- Position outboard so the drain hole is facing downward.
- Remove drain plug with a 5/8" or 16mm wrenchand drain engine oil into an appropriate container.
- Note: Do Not use a crankcase oil pump when changing oil or damage may occur.
- After the initial oil has been drained, temporarily reinstall the drain plug. Disengage the tilt lock and lower the outboard.
- Wait 1 minute to allow the remaining oil that was trapped in the engine to return to the drain.
- Return the outboard to the full tilt position and drain the remaining oil.
- Place new seal on the drain plug and lubricate with oil.
- Reinstall.
How to change your outboard oil filter
- Positon the outboard in a level operating position.
- Electric Start models - to gain clearance to the oil filter: remove the starter solenoid along with its rubber isolation mount from the metal plate that holds it.
- Place a rag or towel below the oil filter to absorb any spilled oil.
- Unscrew old filter by turning the filter counter-clockwise.
- Clean the mounting base. Apply film of clean oil to the filter gasket. Do not use grease.
- Screw new filter on until gasket contacts base, then tighten 2/3 turn.
- If the starter solenoid was removed, reinstall the starter solenoid and the rubber isolation mount to the metal plate.
Refilling our outboard with new oil
Do not try to fill the oil level to the top of the operating range (upper hole).
- Position the outboard in a level operating position.
- Remove the oil fill cap and add oil to the midpoint (middle hole) of the oil level operating range. Adding 1 liter of oil will bring the oil level to the midpoint of the oil level range.
- Reinstall the oil fill cap.
- Idle engine for 5 minutes and check for leaks.
- Stop engine and check oil level on dipstick. Add oil if necessary.
