Outboard Fuel Filters for Your Engine

A compatible outboard fuel filter helps keep debris from reaching the engine’s fuel system. Wholesale Marine carries replacement filters for select Mercury, Yamaha, Johnson/Evinrude, and other outboards, including inline filters and water-separating models. Start with your engine manufacturer and existing filter part number, then confirm the product listing’s model and serial-number fitment before ordering.

Outboards can use more than one filter within the fuel system. If you are replacing a filter under the cowling or a water-separating canister elsewhere on the boat, identify the specific part you need. Similar-looking filters are not necessarily interchangeable.

      Types of Boat Fuel Filters

      Inline Fuel Filters

Inline fuel filters connect within the fuel line and capture particles as fuel flows toward the engine. To find a replacement, check the existing filter’s part number, the fuel-line connection size, the stated engine application, and any marked flow direction. An inline filter does not necessarily separate water, so review the product specifications if water separation is required.

      Marine Fuel Water Separators

A fuel water separator is designed to help remove water and contaminants from fuel before they reach the engine. Many marine systems use a replaceable spin-on canister mounted between the tank and engine. When replacing one, confirm that the new canister fits the installed filter head and meets the requirements of your fuel system.

Our selection includes water-separating fuel filters for compatible outboards, sterndrives, and inboards. Check each product’s listed application, part number, and micron rating; the micron rating alone does not establish that a filter will fit your system.

How to Choose a Marine Fuel Filter

The quickest starting point is your existing filter part number or the replacement specified in your engine or fuel-system manual. Before buying, compare:

      • Engine fitment: Manufacturer, model, horsepower, and serial-number range when specified.
      • Filter design: Inline filter, spin-on canister, replacement element, or complete assembly.
      • Connections and mounting: Fuel-line size for an inline filter or filter-head compatibility for a spin-on canister.
      • Product specifications: The stated application, micron rating, and water-separating capability where needed.

      Boat Fuel Filter FAQs

How do I find the right fuel filter for my outboard?

Check your existing filter part number or the replacement specified by your outboard manufacturer. Then confirm the engine model and serial-number range on the product listing. If your boat has more than one fuel filter, identify which filter you are replacing before ordering.

Do all outboard fuel filters separate water?

No. Fuel filters have different designs and functions. Some capture particles, while water-separating filters are also designed to address water contamination. Check the product specifications rather than assuming an inline or engine-specific filter separates water.

What is the difference between an inline fuel filter and a spin-on fuel water separator?

An inline filter connects within the fuel line. A spin-on fuel water separator is a replaceable canister fitted to a compatible filter head and designed to help remove water as well as contaminants. Use the filter type and replacement part specified for your fuel system.

How often should I replace a boat fuel filter?

Follow the replacement interval in your engine or fuel-system manual. A filter may need attention sooner if it becomes restricted or contaminated. Check the instructions for your specific filter and system.

Can a clogged fuel filter cause engine problems?

Yes. A restricted filter can reduce fuel flow and contribute to hard starting, sputtering, loss of power, or stalling. Those symptoms can have other causes, so inspect the fuel system rather than assuming the filter is the only problem.
