How do I determine the correct size extinguisher for my engine compartment?

Measure your engine compartment's length, width, and height in feet, then multiply all three together to get the total volume in cubic feet. Don't subtract for engines, fixed tanks, or other equipment inside the space; use the full gross volume. Then match that number to the size chart on the product page to select the correct model. For example, a compartment that is 5' x 4' x 3' = 60 cubic feet, which calls for the 75 cu. ft. model (the next size up from your calculated volume).

What is HFC-227, and why is it used instead of Halon?

HFC-227 (also known as FM-200) is a clean agent fire suppressant that extinguishes fires by absorbing heat rather than depleting oxygen, making it safe for occupied spaces. It replaced Halon, which was banned due to ozone-depleting properties. HFC-227 achieves effective suppression at lower concentrations than many alternatives, leaves no water or powder residue, and requires no cleanup after discharge, an important advantage in an engine room.

What triggers automatic discharge, and can it also be triggered manually?

The MA2 discharges automatically when the internal temperature reaches 175°F (79°C). It can also be manually triggered at any time. For boats where the engine room is not easily accessible during an emergency, adding a Fireboy-Xintex Discharge Cable Kit (sold separately) allows manual activation from a remote location such as the helm.

Is this extinguisher safe to use in an occupied engine room, or must people evacuate first?

HFC-227 is generally considered safe for occupied spaces at the concentrations used for fire suppression; it does not suffocate occupants the way CO2 systems do. However, as with any fire event, evacuating the space before and during discharge is strongly recommended as best practice.
