Hydraulic Steering Cylinder: Making It Happen
If the helm pump is the brains of the system, the steering cylinder is the muscle. The hydraulic cylinder is mounted to the outboard or rudder depending on your boat. When the helm pumps hydraulic fluid through the line causing the cylinder to move.
It does so by pushing hydraulic fluid through hoses into the two hydraulic cylinder chambers. Depending on which way you steer once chamber is filled while the other is emptied. This creates a push-pull movement that dictates the change in direction.
Modern hydraulic steering cylinders are balanced, meaning they feature the same number of turns from full lock-to-lock. So, from a forward position it would be the same number of wheel turns to “lock” or fully extend the steering cylinder port or starboard.
