Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Jabsco-Rule 500 GPH Standard 12V Bilge Pump used for?

The Jabsco-Rule 500 GPH Standard 12V Bilge Pump is designed to help remove water from a boat's bilge. It delivers a flow rate of 500 GPH from a 12 VDC power supply and uses a 3/4" hose barb discharge port. Its optimized impeller design is intended to provide consistent flow at its specified amperage.

What are the electrical specifications of the Jabsco-Rule 500 GPH Bilge Pump?

The Jabsco-Rule 500 GPH Bilge Pump operates at 12 VDC with a 2.7 amp draw and requires a 4 amp fuse. Before installing or servicing the pump, disconnect the power. Verify that the vessel's electrical system and fuse setup are appropriate for these specifications.

What features help the Jabsco-Rule 500 GPH Bilge Pump manage water and backflow?

This bilge pump features backflow prevention to reduce leftover water in the bilge and help reduce odor. Hidden air vents in the pump body assist with the check valve and help prevent locking during plumbing installations. A built-in thermal cut-off also provides additional protection for the pump and vessel.

How do you install the Jabsco-Rule 500 GPH Standard 12V Bilge Pump?

Remove the pump from its base using the push tabs on the sides. After placing the pump into the base, push it down until an audible sound is heard. Use stainless steel hose clamps to secure the discharge hose to the 3/4" hose barb, and use appropriately sized stainless steel flathead screws to secure the base without penetrating the hull.

What can reduce the flow rate of the Jabsco-Rule 500 GPH Bilge Pump?

Several plumbing factors can reduce bilge pump flow, including the length of the discharge pipe, the number of bends, and the smoothness or roughness of the pipe and fitting interiors. For thru-hull discharge hoses, the installation information specifies that the discharge hose should be at least 8 inches above the water line.

Should a check valve be used with the Jabsco-Rule 500 GPH Bilge Pump?

Check valves should not be used to prevent siphoning into the boat. According to the installation information, a check valve should only be used to prevent an automatic bilge pump from cycling due to backflow from the discharge line.
