Sea Hawk Monterey Water-Based Bottom Paint
Sea Hawk's Monterey Antifouling Paint is a water-based, semi-hard ablative coating for vessels of all sizes and hull substrates. This premium bottom paint has been a leader in environmentally friendly antifouling protection for over a decade. Monterey paint is easy to apply, emits low VOC's, and contains the highest grade of cuprous oxide available. Its semi-hard ablative properties means it lasts longer and self-polishes to keep your hull smooth and barnacle-free. Monterey is also the perfect paint for boats stowed out of the water because its antifouling power is not reduced by removal from the water. Sea Hawk Monterey Bottom Paint can be applied over most existing bottom paint in good condition.

How to Apply Sea Hawk Monterey Bottom Paint
Sea Hawk Monterey Bottom Paint is easily applied by brush, roller, or spray. When rolling, use only a high-quality short nap 3/8” roller cover. Apply using thin coats. For the smoothest possible finish, thin the paint approximately 10% using water. Monterey has a tendency for settling to occur, especially if the paint has been on the shelf for several months. Thoroughly mix the paint before using. Before using, check the sides and bottom of the can to make sure all the pigment has been mixed in.

Surface Preparation and Application
Previously Painted Surfaces
- Known Compatibility of existing antifoulant
- Power wash to remove any loose paint or other contaminants.
- Apply minimum 2 coats of Monterey. Allow 3-6 hours between coats and a minimum overnight dry.
- Unknown Compatibility of existing antifoulant
- Power wash to remove any loose paint or other contaminants.
- Scuff sand with 80 grit sandpaper, remove all residue and let dry.
- Apply 1 coat of 1277 Barrier coat primer or 1283 Island Primer
- Apply minimum of two coats of Monterey. Allow 3-6 hours between coats and a minimum overnight dry.
- Poor condition of existing antifoulant
- If previous coating is cracking, peeling, or flaking strip the antifoulant with stripper, sanding, or commercial blasting.
- Once stripped refer to the Bare Fiberglass Application Guidelines.
Bare Fiberglass
- To prepare the surface it is important to remove all contaminants first. Scrub the surface with detergent soap and a stiff brush.
- Using either S-80 Wax N’ Grease Killer or S-90 De-Wax Etch & Cleaner scrub the surface and rinse thoroughly.
- Sand to a uniform dull looking surface with 80-100 grit sandpaper and rewash with S-80 Wax and Grease Killer or S-90 De-Watch Etch & Cleaner
- Once cleaned and sanded, seal the surface with 2-3 coats of Tuff Stuff. Apply the second coat once the first has a tacky feel.
- Apply minimum of two coats of Monterey. Allow 3-6 hours between coats and a minimum
Sanding Method:
- Sand to a uniform dull looking surface with 80-100 grit sandpaper and rewash with S-80 Wax and Grease Killer or S-90 De-Watch Etch & Cleaner
- Apply minimum of two coats of Monterey. Allow 3-6 hours between coats and a minimum overnight dry.
Non-Sanding Method:
- Apply one thin coat of Sea Hawk 1266 no more than .3-.5 mils wet film thickness and allow to dry for 1 hour.
- Apply minimum of two coats of Monterey. Allow 3-6 hours between coats and a minimum overnight dry.
Bare Wood
- Clean the surface and ensure it is dry and free of contaminants.
- Sand to a uniformly frosty, dull looking surface with 80-100 grit sandpaper.
- Apply two coats of Monterey. Apply first coat thinned 20% and let dry overnight.
- Apply two more coats allowing 3-6 hours between coats and a minimum overnight dry.
Steel/Aluminum Hulls
- Sandblast to near white or white metal SSPC-SP-10 or equivalent. Remove residue by brush or compressed air.
Copper Based Antifoulant Application
- Apply two coats of S-76 Primer, the first coat applied within 1 hour of sanding. Allow the first coat to dry to a tacky feel then apply second coat.
- Seal the surface by using 3-4 coats of Tuff Stuff. Apply the first coat within 8 hours of applying the last coat of S-76.
- Apply minimum of two coats of Monterey, allow 3-6 hours between coats.
Copper-Free Antifouling Application for Aluminum Only
- Seal the surface with 2 coats of Tuff Stuff. Apply the first coat and allow the surface to dry to a tacky finish.
