SeaStar Xtreme SSCX154 Rack Steering Cable by Dometic

SeaStar Xtreme premium cables have a heavy jacket and a splined, coated core element for maximum smoothness with minimal lost motion. (4" min. bend radius). Back HDPE outer casing for durability and best resistance to UV and chemicals.  Cables meet/exceed all applicable industry standards.

Can be used in place of SSC134 cables with SH5230P helms.

Fits: SH5210P, SH91610P, SH5230P and SH91630P helms.

How to Measure Steering Cables “Measure Twice. Order Once.”

Replacement of Existing Cable: If possible, find the part number stamped on the plastic jacket of the old cable. If you removed the old cable, measure for the replacement cable as follows:

steering-cable-measuring.jpg

For Rack Steering Cable Replacement, Measure Existing Cable as follows: Measure plastic cable jacket (“Y” dimension shown in above drawing) in inches, add 30″, and round up to next foot. Order that length cable.

New Installation: Measure cable routing path from wheel center line to engine connection, as follows: A = Center line of wheel to gunwale (or deck, if routed downward), B = Dash to transom, C = Gunwale to centerline of cable connection at centered tiller.

For Cable Installations through the Engine Tilt Tube: Add A, B & C + 6″, then round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.

For Cables Mounted to Transom, Splashwell or Stringer: Add A, B & C, then subtract 6″ and round up to the next foot. Order that length cable.

TYPICAL SINGLE STATION ROUTING

steering-cable-measuring2.jpgA single-cable, starboard drive push-pull mechanical cable system is shown in this diagram. If your mechanical system is different than the one depicted and/or you have any questions about mechanical steering after reviewing this guide, please contact Dometic (Mechanical) Technical Service at (610)-495-7011 or www.dometic.com

Cable routings (such as those found on pontoon boats) may vary from this drawing. Confirm length by laying a garden hose or similar object) along cable path and measure run from wheel to engine connection point.

Frequently Asked Questions

What helm systems is the SSCX154 compatible with?

The SSCX154 is for rack and pinion steering systems and is compatible with SeaStar/Teleflex helms SH5210P, SH5230P, SH91610, and SH91630P. It provides 4-turn lock-to-lock steering and is the preferred cable for ski and wakeboard boats. It's a single-cable system only; it cannot be used in dual-cable setups.

What cables does the SSCX154 replace?

It's an upgrade replacement for the SSC134 and SSC154 series rack cables, and can also be used with SS141 and SS151 series steering systems. It does not replace SSC124, SSC130, or Detmar cables. If you're unsure, check the part number printed on your existing cable jacket. If it reads SSC134XX or SSC154XX (where XX is the length), the SSCX154 is your direct replacement.

What makes the Xtreme cable better than a standard rack steering cable?

The SSCX154 uses a splined, coated core that fits closely within the liner for minimal lost motion and reduced backlash, meaning the steering wheel's movement translates more directly and precisely to the engine. It also features a heavy HDPE outer jacket for abrasion and water resistance, oil-tempered lay wires for superior strength, and a long-wearing HDPE liner that's lubricated for life. The result is noticeably lighter steering effort, particularly on longer cable runs.

How do I measure for the correct cable length when replacing an existing cable?

For a rack steering cable replacement, measure the plastic cable jacket (the "Y" dimension) in inches, add 30 inches, then round up to the next foot. That's your replacement length. The part number suffix indicates the length: SSCX15415 is 15 feet, SSCX15420 is 20 feet, and so on. When in doubt, confirm by laying a garden hose or flexible measuring tape along your cable routing path from the helm to the engine connection.

Is this cable a SeaStar, Teleflex, or Dometic product, and does the brand name matter?

All three names refer to the same product lineage. Teleflex Marine became SeaStar Solutions, which was subsequently acquired by Dometic Group. The SSCX154 is currently branded as a Dometic SeaStar product but is fully compatible with all legacy Teleflex and SeaStar rack helms and hardware. The brand change does not affect fit, function, or quality.

Does this cable exceed any safety standards?

Yes. All Dometic SeaStar steering cables, including the SSCX154, exceed ABYC safety standards and meet ISO, IMCI, and NMMA certification requirements.
