Tuff-Coat Water-Based Primer for Aluminum & Steel is a pre-mixed, single-component water-based primer designed specifically for metal surfaces. It provides excellent adhesion and is compatible with most high-performance finish coatings. The primer also offers corrosion-inhibiting, abrasion-resistant, low-VOC, fast-drying, and non-flammable characteristics.
What surfaces can Tuff-Coat Aluminum & Steel Primer be applied to?
This Tuff-Coat primer is designed for aluminum and steel surfaces. Before application, surfaces must be clean and dry, with loose particles, grease, and oily residues removed. Rust or existing paint should be removed by sandblasting, power brushing, or hand wire brushing before applying the primer.
What temperature range is recommended for applying Tuff-Coat Primer?
Tuff-Coat Aluminum & Steel Primer should be applied at temperatures between 55°F and 95°F. Applying the primer outside this specified temperature range is not recommended based on the product instructions.
How long does Tuff-Coat Aluminum & Steel Primer take to dry?
The primer is dry to the touch in approximately 1 hour. It can generally be top-coated after 1 to 4 hours, with the recoat time not exceeding 48 hours. Maximum cure time is 48 hours. If the maximum recoat time is exceeded, abrade the surface before recoating.
How should Tuff-Coat Primer for Metals be applied?
Spray application is recommended for Tuff-Coat Aluminum & Steel Primer, although limited applications can be completed with a brush or roller. For brush application, use a nylon/polyester brush. For roller application, use a 3/8-inch woven roller with a phenolic core. A flat rubber squeegee can also be used.
How much area does Tuff-Coat Aluminum & Steel Primer cover?
The recommended spreading rate is 4.0 wet mils and 3.0 dry mils. Approximate coverage is 250 square feet per gallon or 65 square feet per quart. Actual coverage may vary depending on the application and surface conditions.
