DIY: How to Install Boat Carpet

With boating season comes wear and tear. Sun, mud, water, stains, and weather can all affect your boat, especially your boat carpet. Luckily, replacing your boat carpet is an easy project you can do yourself. However, when it comes to boat carpet it is important to remember the difference between marine carpet and regular carpet.

Marine carpet is made to hold up better against the elements. They are UV resistant, weatherproof, stain resistant, etc. With the constant presence of moisture, marine carpet is engineered to hold up against this and is mildew and mold resistant.

Steps for Installation

  1. Carefully measure the area where you will be installing the new carpet. If you have any questions on sizing or what supplies you will need, contact our customer service center.
  2. Remove the old carpet and scrape off any leftover residue. A great way to remove residue is to use mineral spirits.
    • TIP: for a stronger bond, use a fine-grit sandpaper to remove oxidation or corrosion in the area you plan on installing the carpet.
  3. Lay out the carpet in the desired area and make sure it fits prior to applying the adhesive. First, lift a corner and apply adhesive directly on the deck.
    • TIP: a great option for adhesive is the Lancer Boat Carpet Adhesive. It is non-flammable, environmentally friendly, bonds to surfaces fast, and dries clear.
  4. When you are satisfied with the positioning, press the corner with the adhesive down and smooth it in place. Make sure it is lying flat and to press evenly, smoothing out any wrinkles.
  5. Repeat the same process from steps 3 and 4 with the remainder of the carpet.
  6. Finish with a floor roller on top and roll over the carpet to make sure it’s holding. Trim any excess with a utility knife.

After you work hard to install new boat carpet, don’t forget about maintaining it to ensure it stays looking new. Depending on how often you use it, you should clean it monthly or annually. At the very least, you should clean the carpet before putting your boat in storage to keep from any spills and stains from setting and becoming permanent. Cleaning the carpet is as simple as using water, gentle dish soap, and a soft bristle brush. Just scrub gently and rinse well to be sure there is no leftover soap residue. Then, let air dry in a warm and sunny area.
