  • Fill any surface imperfections with approved filler for alkyd topside paint use. Sand the entire surface with 220-grit sandpaper until a flat matte finish is obtained.
  • Wipe the sanding residue off the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method.
  • If the surface is in poor condition and to achieve optimal results, use a primer approved for alkyd topside paints as per manufacturer’s instructions.

Previously Painted Surface – Good Condition

  • Remove all traces of loose paint by sanding the entire surface with 220-grit wet-or-dry sandpaper; wipe surface clean with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method before and after sanding.
  • To achieve optimal results, use a primer approved for alkyd topside paints as per manufacturer’s instructions.

Previously Painted Surface – Poor Condition

  • Completely remove old paint.
  • After all old paint has been removed, follow preparation instructions for bare fiberglass.

Bare Wood

  • Scrub the surface thoroughly with a stiff brush using soap and water.
  • Flush with fresh water to remove the soap residue and allow surface to dry.
  • Remove surface contamination by wiping down the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method. Fill any surface imperfections with approved filler for topside paint use.
  • Sand the entire surface with 220-grit sandpaper until a flat matte finish is obtained. Wipe the sanding residue off the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method.

  • Apply a primer approved for use over clear epoxy as per manufacturer’s instructions.

Application Instructions

  • Apply 2-3 coats of Nautical Enamel followed by the proper dry times. Wiping down the surface with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method between coats to remove any surface contaminates.
  • Sanding between coats is required if the time between coats exceeds 30 days. If sanding is required, sand with 220-grit sandpaper, remove sanding residues with Mineral Spirits or Naphtha using the two-rag method.
