What is Interlux Schooner Marine Varnish used for?
Interlux Schooner Marine Varnish is a high-gloss varnish for interior and exterior surfaces above the waterline. It provides a traditional golden finish along with water resistance and UV protection. Its self-leveling properties help produce a smooth, professional-looking finish when applied to properly prepared wood or previously varnished surfaces.
How many coats of Interlux Schooner Varnish should be applied?
Apply a minimum of five to six coats to bare wood, with the first coat thinned by 10%. Previously varnished surfaces require at least three coats until the desired finish is achieved. Schooner must be sanded between coats to prepare the surface for the next application.
Can Interlux Schooner Varnish be applied over existing varnish?
Yes. Schooner can be applied over existing varnish when the old finish is well adhered, cleaned, and sanded. Previously varnished wood in good condition should be sanded with 120–150 grit paper. If the existing varnish is badly checked or peeling, remove it with Interstrip Semi-Past 299E and follow the bare-wood preparation process.
How should bare wood be prepared for Interlux Schooner Marine Varnish?
Sand bare wood with 80-grit paper and wipe it with Brushing Liquid 333. Apply a sealer coat of Schooner reduced by 10% with Brushing Liquid 333 before applying the remaining coats. For plywood, Inter-Prime Wood Sealer Clear 1026 can be used as the specified sealer.
How long does Interlux Schooner Varnish take to dry between coats?
Drying time depends on temperature. At 73°F, Schooner is touch dry in approximately 2 hours and requires at least 12 hours before another coat. At 50°F, the minimum overcoat time is 16 hours, while at 95°F it is 8 hours. The surface must be sanded between coats.
What application methods can be used for Interlux Schooner Marine Varnish?
Schooner can be applied by brush, roller, airless spray, or conventional spray. For roller application, use a thin-nap roller and tip off the finish with a clean natural-bristle brush or pad. Brushing Liquid 333 is specified for brush and roller application, while Special Thinner 216 is specified for spraying.
