What is Interlux Schooner Gold Marine Varnish used for?
Interlux Schooner Gold Marine Varnish is a high-build, high-gloss one-part varnish for internal and external wood surfaces above the waterline. Its UV technology, resins, and traditional amber color are designed to provide a durable finish with strong gloss and color retention. It can also be applied directly to properly prepared oily woods such as teak.
How many coats of Interlux Schooner Gold Marine Varnish are needed?
The number of coats depends on the condition of the wood and application method. Previously varnished wood generally requires 2-4 unthinned coats, while bare wood uses 2 thinned coats followed by 4 unthinned coats. Additional coats may be applied until the desired finish is achieved, with sanding after every second coat.
Can Interlux Schooner Gold be applied to teak and other oily woods?
Yes. Schooner Gold can be applied to oily woods such as teak when they are properly degreased and prepared. Brushing Liquid 333 is recommended for degreasing. If required, Clear Wood Sealer may be used as a primer. If sealer is omitted, the first coat should be thinned 50% with Brushing Liquid 333 and the second coat 25%.
How do you apply Interlux Schooner Gold Marine Varnish?
Schooner Gold can be applied by brush, roller, or conventional spray. Stir thoroughly before use. When rolling, use a thin-nap roller and tip off the coating with a clean natural-bristle brush or pad to help prevent air bubbles. For conventional spraying, thin 25-30% with Special Thinner 216 according to the application instructions.
How long does Interlux Schooner Gold take to dry before recoating?
Dry and recoat times vary with temperature. At 73°F, Schooner Gold has a hard-dry time of approximately 6 hours and a minimum overcoat time of 12 hours. At 50°F, the hard-dry time is approximately 12 hours with a 16-hour minimum overcoat time. The maximum overcoat window is one month across the listed temperatures.
Can Interlux Schooner Gold Marine Varnish be used below the waterline?
No. Interlux Schooner Gold Marine Varnish is specified for use above the waterline only. It is designed as a protective high-gloss finish for properly prepared interior and exterior wood surfaces.
