Surface Preparation Procedures:
Application Procedure:
Always allow 24 hours drying time between coats. All coats should be applied within a 1-2 week period.
Application Tips:
It is not recommended to sand in between coats of Cetol on exterior wood. This will lower the overall layer thickness, which is very important for effective product performance. To achieve a non-skid surface, evenly sprinkle Interlux Intergrip 2398c Polymeric No-Skid Compound onto the wet surface immediately after applying the second coat of Cetol. If needed, do the same after the third coat as well. The addition of Intergrip 2398c will reduce the life of the Cetol Marine.
If a high gloss finish is desired, Cetol Marine Gloss can be applied after the initial application of three coats of Cetol Marine. Cetol Marine Gloss should never be applied on a deck as the surface will become dangerously slippery when wet.

What is Interlux Sikkens Cetol Marine Wood Finish used for?
Interlux Sikkens Cetol Marine Wood Finish is a translucent protective wood finish for interior and exterior wood applications above the waterline. It provides a satin finish with a dark amber appearance and is designed to remain flexible as wood naturally expands and contracts.
How many coats of Interlux Sikkens Cetol Marine should be applied?
Apply three coats of Cetol Marine for the initial application. Allow 24 hours of drying time between each coat, and apply all three coats within a 1–2 week period. For exterior wood, sanding between Cetol coats is not recommended because it reduces the overall layer thickness.
How should Interlux Sikkens Cetol Marine Wood Finish be applied?
Use a long-haired natural bristle brush and apply the finish in the direction of the wood grain. Apply between 50°F and 95°F while maintaining a wet edge. Do not apply in direct sunlight, on a hot surface, during wet weather, or when the wood moisture content exceeds 18%.
Can Interlux Sikkens Cetol Marine be used below the waterline?
No. Sikkens Cetol Marine Wood Finish is intended for interior and exterior wood applications above the waterline. The supplied application instructions specifically state that Cetol Marine should not be applied below the waterline.
How should wood be prepared before applying Interlux Sikkens Cetol Marine?
New wood should be cleaned with Interlux Special Thinner 216, sanded with 180–220 grit sandpaper along the grain, and cleaned again before application. Previously coated wood must have existing coatings removed before following the new-wood preparation procedure. Weathered or previously oiled wood requires additional cleaning and preparation.
How long should Interlux Sikkens Cetol Marine dry between coats?
Allow 24 hours of drying time between each coat. The initial application consists of one coat followed by 24 hours of drying, then a second coat and another 24-hour drying period before the third coat. Drying conditions and proper surface preparation should be followed as specified in the application instructions.
