How to Apply Pettit Black Widow Hard Racing Bottom Paint

Pettit Black Widow Bottom Paint is easily applied by brush, roller, or spray. When rolling, only use a high-quality short nap (3/16" maximum) roller cover. Mix paint thoroughly prior to application to ensure ingredients are evenly dispersed throughout the can. All surfaces must be clean, dry, and properly prepared prior to painting. Do not apply Black Widow directly on aluminum hulls or outdrives without properly priming first. When spraying, do not thin Black Widow more that 5% or inadequate film thickness will occur.

Burnishing of Black Widow to create a slicker finish can be done with 400 - 1200 grit wet or dry sandpaper after the coating has dried for at least 48 hours to achieve a smooth but matte finish. For a glossy finish, sand with 3000-5000 grit sandpaper. If burnishing, a third or fourth coat of Black Widow is recommended depending on application method.

  • Application Method: Brush, roller, airless or conventional spray.
  • Number of Coats: 1 minimum per season with additional coats for extended service

Surface Preparation and Application Systems

Previously Painted Surfaces

  • Black Widow can be applied over most aged hard antifouling coatings.
  • Old tin copolymers must be removed completely or sealed with Tie-Coat Primer before applying Black Widow.
  • If previous coating is in good condition:
    • Thoroughly sand with 80 grit sandpaper then solvent clean with 120 Brushing Thinner.
    • Apply two thin coats of Black Widow.
  • If previous coating is in poor condition:
    • Remove to the bare surface by sanding or using paint remover.
    • Proceed with one of the bare systems below.

Bare Fiberglass

  • All bare fiberglass should be thoroughly cleaned with Pettit 92 Bio-Blue Hull Surface Prep or dewaxed several times with D95 Dewaxer.
  • Proceed with either Sanding Method or the Non-Sanding Methods below.
  • Sanding Method:
    • Sand thoroughly with 80 grit production paper to a dull, frosty finish.
    • Rewash surface with Pettit 120 or 120VOC Brushing Thinner to remove residue.
    • Apply two finish coats of Black Widow.
  • Non-Sanding Method:
    • Thoroughly clean, de-wax, and etch the surface with 92 Bio-Blue Hull Surface Prep using a medium Scotch-Brite pad.
    • Thoroughly rinse all residue and let dry.
    • Apply one coat of Pettit Protect Epoxy Primer.
    • Apply two thin finish coats of Black Widow.

Bare Wood

  • Sand thoroughly with 80 grit sandpaper and wipe clean using Pettit 120 or 120VOC Brushing Thinner.
