PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Interlux VC-17M Extra Antifouling Boat Bottom Paint

VC-17m is a thin film bottom paint for racing sailboats and powerboats that is formulated with Fluoro microadditive to reduce friction and drag. When applied the VC17m will immediately give a hard, super smooth, racing finish that would normally take days of tiresome sanding. VC17m is great for use on inflatables. VC 17m uses metallic copper to achieve complete protection against zebra mussels, teredo worms, weed, algae and slime fouling. This is especially helpful in freshwater or low fouling saltwater. The applied thickness of VC 17m is eight times thinner than traditional paint, which virtually eliminates film build-up. It’s quick drying for fast re-launch.

Features:

  • Thin film antifouling for racing sailboats and powerboats
  • With Fluoro microadditive for a low friction surface
  • Hard, smooth surface for use in fresh and low fouling salt water
  • Great for use on Inflatables
  • Quick drying for fast re-launch
  • Biolux Technology blocks slime and algae growth

Product Compatibility: Interlux VC 17m is compatible with all antifouling paints but to get the best results from the antifouling and the most drag reduction from fluoro microadditive it is best to remove all soft paints and any paint in poor condition. Hard paints that are in good condition may be overcoated with VC 17m but due to the porosity of hard antifouling paints, it needs to be sanded several times to reach an acceptable surface for application of VC 17m. Begin by sanding with 80-grit sandpaper and work through the sandpaper grades until finally sanding with 320-grit sandpaper.

How to Apply Interlux VC17M Extra

It is recommended that in low fouling, cold saltwater three coats are applied the first season, then two coats each season after. For boats in freshwater, apply two coats the first season, then one coat each season after.

  • Application Method: Airless Spray or Roller
  • Number of Coats: 2 Coats Minimum
  • Coverage: 85 sq. ft. / quart (roller)
  • Application Temp: 45°F Min. / 95°F Max.
  • Thinner: Interlux 216 Special Thinner 10% by volume maximum

VC17m Extra can be applied with a short nap roller or 4-6" airless spray gun (full pressure, 60-70 thou. tip). When using a short nap roller for application, you can add up to 10% thinner for ease of application. When rolling, pour only small amounts into a steel roller tray and be sure to roll quickly and in one direction only. When spraying, make sure that the nozzle is not more than 6-8 inches from the hull. Do not use conventional spray equipment as this may result in dry spray.

Surface Preparation

Surfaces previously painted with VC 17m Extra with Biolux do not need to be sanded.

Previously Painted Surfaces:

  • Surface must be clean and dry prior to application of VC 17m Extra with Biolux. Sand areas that are loose or flaking with 320 grade (grit) paper.
  • Clean with Special Thinner 216. With conventional antifouling paint Removal is best but if this is not possible, start sanding with 80 grade (grit) paper and progressively sand with finer grades until the final sanding with 320 grade (grit).
  • Remove sanding residue.

Bare Fiberglass:

  • Begin by scrubbing well using soap and water and a stiff brush.
  • Rinse with fresh water. Wipe with Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202.
  • Sand with 320 grade (grit) paper. Wipe clean.

Bare Wood:

  • Wipe clean. Sand surface with 80-100 grit sandpaper and remove sanding residue.

Steel Hulls:

  • (Keels & Hulls) Blast to near white metal surface (Sa 2½).
  • Clean thoroughly with Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202
  • Overcoat within one hour with InterProtect 2000E thinned 10-15% with Reducing Solvent 2316N

Application Information

  • Performance of the paint relies directly on the care taken in surface preparation, the application technique, and the number of coats applied.
  • It is important for performance to ensure that uniform film is achieved and the recommended number of coats are applied
  • Apply to clean, dry, properly prepared surfaces only. Bare surfaces must be sanded.
  • Do not apply VC 17m Extra with Biolux over graphite antifoulings. Do not apply over soft antifouling paints.
  • Do not apply VC 17m Extra with Biolux over aluminum.
